What's a McBaguette?

The newest use for a delicious, fresh baguette is... MickeyD's?

On April 18th, McDonald's is rolling out a six-week special in France, the McBaguette. The sandwich will feature their signature hamburger patty, topped with lettuce and local Swiss cheese. The new menu feature showcases the fast food company's determination to break through to the global market with localized foods. They've pledged to use locally baked baguettes for that signature French flavor. If the sandwich proves to be popular, it just might make it onto the permanent McDonald's menu.

What do you think of the McBaguette burger?

Bread is bread. Those who love the regular buns will hate it. Those who think baguettes are special will hate it. For goodness sakes! Smile and enjoy!

Why in the %#@@ in France would one want to go to McDonald’s when there are so many fine small eateries that truly serve local dishes, even le hamburger? I agree with Francoise, c’est un sacrilege !

I worry more about where and how the cow lived and died than about what is probably a gmo loaf of bread.

Chris says: Imagine when they introduce Foie Gras !!!, but they already did in Corrèze region few years ago. To launch Mc Donald in that region they sold a “Terroir Burger” with Foie Gras in it. And right now in France as I am writing, they are selling new burgers with French cheese: “Cantal”, “Saint-Nectaire”, “Chèvre” or “Fourme d’Ambert”. No comment.

We must at all costs stem the tide of inferior food, regardless of where it comes from. Stick with good identifiable natural ingredients, wherever you are. That is the basis of all good food.

All bread is not created equal. Bread is not just bread but when prepared and baked right it is most delectable. Warm and buttery with garlic, virgin olive oil in a basket. Hard crust and soft inside. The best there ever was; San Francisco’s Paisano French, unforgettable, alas, closed its doors a few years ago to the dismay of thousands of San Franciscans. If the McB follows suit it will be a smash. I kind of like their fish filets.

I would have to taste it but thinking about it, my head says too much cholesterol, and it doesn’t seem like all the ingredients together would turn my appetite on. Never!

Bunch of snobs! As much as I adore fresh, local produce and eggs and poultry from my neighborhood free-range farm, I DO love a McDonald’s burger and fries every now and then… And I’m skinny, healthy, exercise often and eat mostly veggie.

By the way, McDonald’s are EVERYWHERE in the Netherlands and serve local chicken croquet style sandwiches (that are NASTY, but taste the way the Dutch want them to; have you ever seen a FEBO?).

I live in France and I am amazed at the number of people aged 18 to 25 I see walking away from Mickey D’s with large brown bags of food these days. My take is this: compare a great fresh baguette sandwich with a local ham and cheese at 4,50 Euros to a large hamburger from McD’s at less than 3 Euros plus those yummy, fattening frites and it’s a hard argument to say you didn’t get a bargain.
