Atmosphere:
Taking its name from the nearby sea, La Mer sits on a prime sliver of beach in Waikiki, Oahu. Its open air, facing the Pacific Ocean with Diamond Heads dramatic silhouette as the stunning backdrop for diners. Attentive wait staff and table men provide flawless service, yet fade into the refined background, making for a seamless dining experience. As wonderful as the surroundings and service are, though, one is just as likely to be drawn in by the exquisite food.
Unique Style:
The menu is creatively developed with fresh island ingredients and a tropical flair I havent found elsewhere. Because I lived in Hawaii for years, I celebrated numerous special occasions at La Mer and have had the opportunity to taste a wonderful selection of their offerings.
The Food:
Foie gras with roasted, caramelized pineapple is an unorthodox combination that made my dining partners balk at the menu, but swoon upon tasting it. The tender tournedos of Japanese beef with Bordelaise were absolutely succulent. For dessert, my favorite offering is the Painters Palette, a sampling of tropical sorbets, fruit, berry coulis, and an almond Florentine all made in house. A complimentary plate of the pastry chefs petit fours and nougats is presented with the coffee after dessert.
The Experience:
La Mer is worth every penny. Its the quintessential special occasion restaurant - with great food and impeccable service - that just happens to have the good fortune of being on a beautiful island in the Pacific Ocean. Make it a point to go to La Mer when youre in Hawaii.
