Healthy Alsatian Dinner

By Rebecca Franklin, About.com

Rolling green pastures under a backdrop of distant, soaring mountains hint at the active, healthy lifestyle enjoyed by Alsatians. Pickled foods are a specialty in this mountainous region, as are homemade sausages. Antioxidant-rich vegetables commonly grace the table at mealtime, as well.

Studies have shown that a diet high in antioxidants and fiber and low in fat can positively influence a number of health conditions including high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, and certain types of cancer.

For a taste of Alsace, try grilling a French country sausage, found in specialty food stores or mix up your own lean turkey sausage. Garnish it with cancer fighting, heart-healthy Braised Red Cabbage and a small helping of red potatoes boiled in their skins. Enhance the meal with a spicy Alsatian white wine. Finish your French feast with Baked Apricots, a warm, enticing dish accented with local kirschwasser, or kirsch.

With careful planning, you can eat French food and still be focused on a healthy lifestyle.
